To celebrate the spectacular 40-year growth of Shenzhen, China’s showcase technology and financial hub just across the border from Hong Kong, Wu Guoyong spent the past seven years photographing the city’s spectacular architecture from the air and ground, using drone technology to offer a rare perspective. The earliest photograph dates back to the 1970s, when Shenzhen was little more than a collection of rural villages, rice fields, and small fishing ports. The latest, taken in mid-2018, reveals a futuristic and innovative cityscape reaching out from Shenzhen’s coastal beaches across delta lowlands, punctuated by rugged, forested mountain terrain.
