Isabella Bird, born in 1831, was one of the most well-travelled and intrepid of English explorers in the 19th century. She wrote books about her journeys through many regions, including Japan, Korea, Hawaii, China and the American Rockies, and was an avid photographer. Her photographs of China are unique.
