From the inauguration of the London Eye in 2000 to the 2009 Copenhagen climate change summit, “Eyewitness Decade” tells the story of the first ten years of the new millennium in a series of stunning and awe-inspiring images. Some record the unfolding of major world events: 9/11, the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the financial crisis of 2008, and President Obama’s inauguration. Others tell more local and personal stories: a man sleeping rough in Cambridge, chess-players in Budapest, and patients receiving treatment in Havana. Some explore the world of nature and natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina, an eruption on Mount Etna), while others celebrate human ingenuity and creativity (London Fashion Week, the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva). And a handful look at the quirkier side of life: a banker with 350 body piercings, workers cleaning Big Ben’s four clock faces, and Gala Bingo in south London.
